Cellulite, also known as the orange peel or cottage cheese appearance of skin, refers to the fat deposits stored on specific body parts such as thighs and buttock areas.

You don’t have to be fat or overweight to have cellulite. In other words, skinny people or athletes are also not exempted from getting cellulite on their buttocks, thighs, and abdomen.

So, what causes the formation of the ugly, lumpy cellulite?

1. Genetics. People whose family members or close relatives have cellulite are more likely to have it.

Studies show that almost 85% of women who have cellulites, their parents were affected by the same problem at least once in their lives.

2. Lack of Exercise. People who do not exercise due to their busy schedules or sedentary lifestyles are more prone to cellulite formation.

To prevent the buildup of fat tissues that lead to the formation of cellulite, you need to exercise to speed up your metabolism and tone up your muscles.

Doing cardiovascular program or strength training is one way in reducing cellulite. Walking, jogging, and swimming are fun cardiovascular exercises that work to avoid the buildup of cellulite.

3. Poor Eating Habits. Unhealthy high-fat and processed foods together with excess consumption of alcohol and caffeine are closely linked to cellulite formation. The body looses its ability to flush the toxins they produce so they are stored in the fatty tissues.

Drink 8 glasses of water daily instead of caffeine or alcoholic beverages.

4. Smoking. It’s true that smoking is one of the causes of cellulite. Smoking weakens the skin by constricting the capillaries and harms the connective tissue. As a result, the skin develops cellulite.

There is no instant fix for cellulite, but you can get rid of cellulite through a healthy diet, regular exercise, and plenty of water to flush out the toxins from the body.

In her young days, there was no such thing as cellulite. If the thighs were large, they were called heavy. Women who had full hips in old days were considered having powerful, awe-inspiring ability to procreate.

The word cellulite appeared in the early 1970s and was popularized by a French dietitian who offered treatments promising to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

It’s in the 70s that the war against cellulite began; women started paying close attention to the shape of their bottom and thighs when wearing short hemlines and snug blue jeans.

A militia of cellulite combatants appeared in the market: creams, devices, special exercises, surgical procedures, including liposuction, and, most recently, lasers.

Cellulite products generated $11.8 million in U.S. department stores last year, and the number of liposuction procedures performed on women increased 168.5 percent between 1997 and 2007.

The war against cellulite still rages to this day because cellulite affects nearly 90 percent of women regardless of their ages, races, weights and shapes. Even if you are skinny, you are still prone to have cellulite.

Although there is no instant cure for cellulite yet, there are ways and treatments to reduce the appearance of lumpy, dimpled cellulite.

2. Insufficient Intake of Water. Not drinking enough water means that there is no proper circulation. When the circulation is poor and the toxins and wastes do not get flushed out, they accumulate and get trapped in the fat tissues. This results in the formation of unsightly dimpled appearance.

To flush out the chemical toxins and wastes , you need to drink at least seven to eight glasses of water a day.

3. Unhealthy Eating Diet. Alcohol, caffeine, spicy or fatty foods all contribute in the appearance of cellulite because the toxins they produce get trapped in the fatty tissues.

You have to cut back on high-fat and high-grease foods while increasing the amount of natural foods such as fruits, vegetables, and grains.

4. Smoking. Smoking is not only bad for the skin and lungs, but it also impacts negatively on capillaries, thus increasing the dimpling effect of cellulite.

5. Tension and Stress. Tension and stress can block the tissues, preventing proper waste elimination and purification.

6. Medication. Medication not only disturbs the body’s natural processes, but also the purification system that is naturally in place.

Diet pills, sleeping pills and diuretics can all cause cellulite; oral contraceptives, which increase the body’s estrogen, cause fat cells to enlarge, leading to water retention. Retaining water inhibits the body from flushing out the toxins, thus bringing about the formation of cellulite.

7. Lack of Exercise. Lack of exercise contributes to the formation of cellulite. As exercise increases the body’s metabolism and blood circulation to the cellulite affected areas, it’s still one of the effective ways to fight cellulite.

Among the technical and scientific terms, cellulite is the most common term that has been used to describe the dimpled appearance of the skin on your thighs, hips and buttocks.

Cellulite is a natural part of aging and is a problem for most women at some point in their lives. It is most often seen in women because of the hormonal differences that play a major role in its formation.

Many people think that cellulite is just a problem for those who are overweight. Wrong! Cellulite is predetermined by genetics so even thin women can develop the appearance.

Cellulite is formed when clumps of fat cells push up against surrounding connective tissue, giving you dimpled skin or the appearance of “orange peel” or “cottage cheese” and what appears to be clumps of fat under your skin. In simple words, cellulite is formed when there is a buildup of fats and toxins underneath the skin.
